Anthony C. Boucouvalas

Professor in Multimedia Communications

  A.C. Boucouvalas, was Professor in Multimedia Communications and Director of the Microelectronics and Multimedia Communications Research Centre of Bournemouth University. He has been actively involved with research in various aspects of fibre optic communications, wireless communications and multimedia, and has an accumulated 25 years working experience in well known academic and industrial research centres. Professor Boucouvalas' research spans a wide range of topics in Communications and Multimedia, both from the theoretical as well as the practical points of view. His recent work has been directed toward communication protocol problems arising from various areas of wireless communication, expressive internet communications, effective human computer interfaces and inverse fibre optic problems. His work is supported by research grants and contracts from European Union and industrial organisations. Professor Boucouvalas has published over 180 papers in learned journals.

Professor Boucouvalas has now moved to the University of Peloponnese, Tripoli, Greece.

• Graduated with a B.Sc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Newcastle upon Tyne University, in 1978. Received the M.Sc. and D.I.C. degrees in Communications Engineering, in 1979 and in 1982  his Ph.D. degree in Fibre Optics, all from Imperial College.
• At GEC Hirst Research Laboratories in 1982, soon after to become Group Leader and finally Divisional Chief Scientist working in the fields of  Fibre Optic Components, Measurements and Sensors.
• During 1987 to 1994, he worked for  Hewlett Packard Laboratories  as a Project Manager, and was involved with many projects in the fields of Optical Communications, Optical Networks and Optical Instrumentation.
• In 1994 he became an academic by joining Bournemouth University as a Reader in Communications Engineering.
• In 1996 became Professor in Multimedia Communications.
• In 1999 became director of the Microelectronics and Multimedia Communications Research Centre.
• In 2001 became a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (UK), and
• In January 2002 he was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (USA) 'for contributions to the understanding and development of optical fiber components and optical wireless communications'.
