This Months Stories:

As reported in last months newsletter, DEC Business Relations Officer Paula Jones visited San Diego as part of the MBA Case Competition. The BU MBA team performed really well achieving third place in the competition. Paula said: It was not an easy ride hence why we all got very little sleep during the two days of the competition! The whole trip was a fantastic experience and I would say we learnt as much in 24 hours as we would normally during a whole unit.
The case study required the team to suggest possible business partners for IMG the organisation featured in the case study. IMG were so impressed with the suggestions made by the BU team that they have requested that a meeting is arranged with the possible business partner. Paula will attend the meeting to represent BU.
Update from Education Liaison Co-ordinator, Jennifer Swain
We are delighted to announce the launch of a new section on the BU website which is dedicated to careers advisors and teachers.
We work closely with careers advisors and teachers to promote Higher Education, and more specifically BU, to UG students both regionally and nationally so our relationships with advisors of prospective students are vital to the success of our work. This is the first time that BU has had an online area designed specifically for this stakeholder group and we hope that the introduction of this facility will see an increase in recruitment activity, further engagement with BU from advisors and a heightened level of communication with not only our target schools and colleges but also those who are less familiar with BU.
The Education Liaison Team are aware that there are colleagues within our Academic Centres who are actively involved in student recruitment activity (many of you have worked with us before, making it possible for us to offer visits, talks or BU specific events). However, to help us build up a picture of what were providing as an institution, we hope you will join us in promoting this new project.

DEC welcomed back Iain Hill on 13 March. Iain, who is Design Manager and Business Development Manager at RGE Engineering graduated in Product Design Visualisation in 1998.
RGE Engineering is the largest supplier of plastic furniture in the UK and a worldwide manufacturer of plastic injection moulded components and injection moulded tooling supplying their products to big names such as Ikea and Bosch.
The Live Project involved second year Design Engineering students designing a task chair adjustable arm, and presenting their design to Iain, Clive Hunt and the rest of their cohort. Iain was impressed by each of the ideas presented to him but the eventual winner was Chris Noble. Chris now has the opportunity to spend two weeks at RGE. During his visit Chris will work closely with a designer and see his idea developed to the point of being ready to prototype. Chris design will feature in RGEs product catalogue and Iain will report back on how many units are sold. Congratulations to Chris on this great opportunity!

The British Council organised a visit to DEC for Pakistan School Counsellor Shahid Farooq. Mr Farooq visited DEC on the 13 March where he was met by Dr Zulfiqar Khan. Dr Khan, Dr Xavier Velay and Mehran Koohgilani each presented a talk to Mr Farooq about the School before showing him around our CAD laboratories.
Following the visit Dr Khan said: The counsellor was very impressed with the DEC courses, CAD facilities, research informed teaching and students' projects. I hope this will provide opportunities to develop further links (direct and through British Council) and student recruitment in our T&D framework.
This month Janice Hurne received a visit from BIT graduate Paul Gibson who brought her up to speed on his career success since leaving BU. Paul is now a DI with Dorset Police and attributes his success to his experience on the BIT course, citing the hybrid nature of the course (business and IT), the skills he developed, and the strategic thinking about the bigger picture which was presented to him as contributing to his career development.
Paul is currently in discussion with the Software Systems group regarding collaboration on process modelling for police activities and has also written software which is now widely adopted within the UK police forces. He has ambitions to eventually complete a masters and PHD and become an academic.
March has been a busy month for college visits. Helen Stickland, Marketing Development Manager, and Emma Bennett, Marketing Co-ordinator visited South Downs College in Waterlooville at the beginning of the month. Lecturers from the college were keen to have us there to provide information about the creative technology courses that we offer, giving us a great opportunity to raise awareness of these courses among the Colleges year 11 and 12 students.
On 6 March Sarah Palmer and Emma Bennett represented DECs design courses at Barton Peveril College, Eastleigh. The event was organised to promote higher education opportunities to the colleges art and design students. The day was a great success and we were one of the busiest stands at the event.
Tim Reynolds visited Peter Symmons College on the 10 March to talk to their students about DEC design courses. The BU Education Liaison team also represented the University as a whole at this week long careers event.
During the past month technology company Codestone have been singing the praises of our software systems courses.
After the success of their pilot graduate training scheme, Codestone have announced that they will be launching two graduate schemes to produce technical infrastructure specialists and IT sales experts.
DEC Business Information Technology graduate John Treweeks who joined the pilot graduate scheme in 2006, said: I feel very fortunate to be working for a growing company in a job I love, while being given time to study for a diploma in accounting. Im given numerous projects to complete when they feature areas I havent learnt about yet Codestone gives me the time to study and learn from in-house experts Im learning on the job.
Currently Codestone recruit a quarter of their staff from Bournemouth University. Jeremy Buckwell, Codestones Managing Director said: Generally those with good academic achievements are keen to map the path of their employment by choosing jobs offering training and promotion prospects. Its great for the graduates and for the growth of our company. The quality of candidates we meet is a reflection of the high-calibre teaching at Bournemouth University.
We have now come to the end of our run of DEC open days for 2008 recruitment, and can confirm that we welcomed even more potential students than last year.
An impressive 900 potential students and their accompanying guests visited us over the six dates, compared with 846 last year. These numbers are a testament to everyones hard work at the Open Days and are a fantastic achievement.
