All Hands on DEC - June 2007

Rain fails to deter Open Day visitors This Months Stories:

Speed-dating delegates come to BU

Sixty delegates attended the Annual Careers Advisors and Teachers Convention at Talbot Campus on Thursday 14 June. But this year’s event had an added twist!

There was a formal welcome speech by Professor Rosemary Pope and an exhibition with representation from all of our Academic Schools, Partnerships and relevant Professional Services, including the International Office and Academic Services. We offered a full programme with three presentations, two seminars (from a selection of ten) and what was the highlight of the day – the chance to speed date academics!

Academic staff had ten minutes with small groups of delegates to talk about their subject area before the bell sounded and they had to move tables to meet the next guest. Delegates and colleagues said that the convention was successful, worthwhile and enjoyable.

BU was delighted to send out a very positive message about the expertise we can offer and the enthusiasm our staff share. A great number of delegates reported that they found the event valuable and were particularly impressed with BU’s facilities and staff.

Nicola Murray-Fagan, BU’s Education Liaison Manager said: “It is so important that we keep these key influencers up to date with issues in HE and about the developments here at BU. Considering that many of the delegates provide careers guidance in several schools, it was almost like having seven delegates in one person!"

Feedback from the evaluation surveys showed the diversity and delivery of the programme was highly commended and that there were many good comments about the day.

Third time lucky for UCY students

The University Centre Yeovil (UCY), a BU partner college, is celebrating the success of its CAD (Graphics and Packaging) students at the Starpack Awards – the third year in a row that UCY has been present.

Five UCY Foundation degree Computer Aided Design students were rewarded at the glittering event, which recognises innovation in packaging design and technology and is sponsored by industry giants such as Marks & Spencer, Britvic and Nestlé.

John Jarvis, from Poole, received the Marks & Spencer-sponsored Silver award for his Easter Egg Carton Pack design. Gareth Rabbits, from Ilfracombe, received a commendation and a special Design Cognition Award for the “technical feasibility and commercial awareness” of his Britvic Soft Drinks design.

Building on these achievements, UCY has developed a new course to further satisfy industry needs for pioneering, sustainable packaging design. The BSc (Hons) Sustainable Graphics & Packaging is a one-year top-up course designed for professionals and students who have completed an HND or Foundation degree and have experience of working in the industry.

SMS Service gets the green light

Following presentations from external providers, Undergraduate Marketing Manager Stacey Gale is happy to offer the following update about BU’s future use of SMS text services.

“I'm pleased to announce that BU has finally signed an agreement for an SMS texting service. We have decided to go with the company TXT4, who made a presentation a while ago. Initial testing for use on Open Day registrations has already taken place, and numbers will be published on the banners being displayed on campus and on posters which are being sent to schools/colleges and libraries we have on our EL database.

“People are being encouraged to text ‘inside’ to 84880 (this is in line with our new undergraduate campaign ‘Turning thinking inside out’). The licence agreement will last for a year and can be used by multiple users, although responses by text may be charged.”

New undergraduate campaign is turned ‘inside out’

Marketing and communications agency Lawton was given the task of creating a concept for 2007’s Undergraduate campaign.

This campaign is tagged ‘Turning thinking inside out’. The line, which encapsulates the vision presented at the Away Day, aims to make prospective students think differently about BU and encourage those who are eager to learn. The creative revolves around a T-shirt which is worn inside out so the text is shown back to front. Click here to see the Open Day poster so you can judge for yourself!
